The rain patters against the windows to my left while I stick a picture of Liam on the whiteboard. I uncap my pen and write ‘missing’ in red.

There’s a clearing of a throat behind me, and I turn in time to spot Riveiro entering the room, dressed in black pants and a white, silk blouse. She eyes the whiteboard with a small smile, and I wave a hand dismissively. “Forgive an old fart for preferring the old ways of doing things.”

Riveiro is a modern woman of the world and prefers to use a whiteboard app on her sleek tablet. Gone are the days of traditional ways.

“I never said a word.”

The teasing lilt of her voice draws a smile from my lips. Rubbing my neck, I breathe out a tired sigh. “Four dead and two missing, and we’re nowhere closer to catching this guy.”

As she comes to stand beside me, I breathe her in—laundry soap and a discreet, feminine perfume with hints of jasmine and blackcurrant. It’s better than the stench of frustration and failure.

“The killer is only human; he’ll make a mistake.”

“What do you think?” I ask, gesturing to the whiteboard, and the numerous photographs of mutilated bodies. Before she can reply, I continue, “What I don’t get is why the last three victims went missing when the first two were left for us to find. Kit, on the other hand, was left for Keira to discover—almost as if all of this is for her and her alone.”

“So, rather than a crazed killer playing copycat, the killings are done with a personal motive that involves Keira?”

“Which means the killer is close to her.” With another sigh, I step closer to the whiteboard. “The killer kept Kit alive for days before finally slicing his throat—”

“Barely alive,” Riveiro cuts in. “The results from the autopsy indicate a lot of the body parts, like the ears, fingers, and toes, were removed before death.

“Alive nonetheless, which means there’s a good chance Liam is still alive. We need to double down on our efforts to find him.”

Riveiro slides her phone out of her pocket and taps into it. “On it.” After she has pocketed it, she says, “But, Wells, you need to prepare yourself that it’s probably too late already. If the killer wanted you to catch Liam alive, you would. If we know one thing by now, all of this,” she gestures to the whiteboard, “has been carefully planned out.”

“That’s what I’m afraid of,” I mutter, capping my pen.

As I place it back down on the nearest table, the door opens, and one of the lab technicians enters with an envelope clutched in his hands.

“We have a match to the fingerprints found in Keira’s bedroom on the day the head was discovered on her pillow and the two officers were killed outside.”

Riveiro perks up, accepting the envelope when he holds it out. Her eyes find mine, and then she lifts the flap and pulls out a sheet of paper.

“Well?” I ask.

“It’s King Knight.”
